1688 vs Alibaba: Real Price Difference and When to Use Each

Same parent company, very different marketplaces. 1688 is usually 20–50% cheaper than Alibaba.com for equivalent products — here's why, with the trade-offs that matter for small importers.

The short answer

Alibaba.com is built for export: English interface, international shipping, Trade Assurance escrow — and prices that include all of that overhead. 1688.com is Alibaba's Chinese domestic wholesale site: same factory base, no export services, prices typically 20–50% lower. If you can handle (or outsource) the language, payment and logistics gap, 1688 is almost always the cheaper source.

Why the same factory charges less on 1688

Export listings price in negotiation buffer, English-speaking sales staff, international payment fees, and the expectation of one-off foreign buyers. Domestic listings compete on razor-thin margins against neighbors in the same industrial cluster, for repeat business from Chinese resellers who know exactly what things cost. You're not getting a discount on 1688 — you're seeing the real wholesale price.

There's a second effect: many Alibaba 'manufacturers' are actually trading companies that source from 1688 themselves. Buying on 1688 can mean skipping one whole margin layer.

What you give up

No English, no card payments, no international shipping, no Trade Assurance. Dispute resolution assumes you can litigate in Chinese. Minimum orders are lower but sizing, labeling and packaging default to domestic conventions. Every one of these gaps is bridgeable with an intermediary — the question is only whether the price difference covers the intermediary's fee. For most products it does, several times over.

The practical rule

Use Alibaba.com when you need supplier-financed protections on a large first order and don't yet have a China-side partner. Use 1688 (through an agent or a comparison service) when unit economics matter — private label, dropshipping upgrades, repeat wholesale. Many experienced buyers do both: discover and negotiate on Alibaba, then find the same or equivalent factory on 1688 for reorders.

Frequently asked

Are 1688 and Alibaba the same company?

Both are Alibaba Group marketplaces. Alibaba.com targets international trade; 1688.com targets Chinese domestic wholesale.

Is the quality on 1688 worse?

No — it's frequently the same factory and the same production line. Quality risk comes from picking the wrong supplier, which is why side-by-side sample comparison matters more than which marketplace you saw them on.

Can I use Trade Assurance on 1688?

No. 1688 has domestic buyer protections, but they're designed for Chinese businesses. Foreign buyers rely on their intermediary's inspection and the payment protection of their own channel (e.g. PayPal).
